October kicks off a month-long series of documentaries at Pickford Film Center
Bellingham, WA, September 15, 2011 — Pickford Film Center will launch its annual month-long, documentary film series, Doctober, beginning September 30th, 2011. Over thirty films will be shown at both Pickford’s Bay St. and Cornwall locations over the course of the month. In addition to an incredible line-up of unique documentary films, theatergoers can look forward to special appearances from regional and national filmmakers, as well as prizes for the most enthusiastic attendees.
Patrons can also anticipate a wide variety of cutting edge films--from the family friendly to the political: The Whale follows a young orca that loses track of his pod and winds up in the Nootka Sound, where he develops a relationship with the native human population; El Bulli is a behind the scenes look at Spanish chef Ferran Adria, at the top of his game and beloved by foodies worldwide; Battle for Brooklyn is a provocative film about one man's eight-year fight to preserve his neighborhood from a questionable invoking of eminent domain. The festival will also include encore presentations of some of PFC’s more recently screened and highly-acclaimed documentaries.
Doctober was created in 2007 as part of an ongoing effort to bring great documentaries to Bellingham. The festival features documentaries that have had little to no distribution. In some cases, this may be the only chance for audiences to experience these films in a theatrical setting. Doctober is also an opportunity for Pickford Film Center to work with other local organizations and to provide a forum for important community issues, often with special guests and guided discussions.
